Sir Davy set for Winter Championship Series Final

If there is a model of consistency for results delivered in 2022, Sir Davy has to be near the top of that tree.

In seven runs in his four-year-old year, the gelding has returned four wins and three minor placings with the latest effort a third placing at Flemington in The David Bourke (1630m) at benchmark 90 level on 18 June.

A winner at Caulfield, Sandown, Warrnambool and Swan Hill, Sir Davy will attempt to break his Flemington duck in the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m) on Saturday.

While co-trainer Dave Eustace continues his enthusiasm for the horse’s performances so far, he sees the task of turning the form around on Tuvalu, winner of that June 18 event, as a tough one.

Tuvalu carried 58 kilos that day with Sir Davy’s allotted weight 1.5 kilograms heavier.

“I don’t see that he could reverse the form necessarily,” Eustace said.

“I suppose at the handicaps there might be a bit of a weight swing.

“He’s had a great prep, he’s very a solid, consistent horse and he should run well.”

Of the latest effort, Eustace saw no negatives despite the four-straight winning streak coming to an end.

“It was a good run, wasn’t it. It was just a really solid run and the front two (Tuvalu and Visinari) are really good horses.

“For Saturday, we’ll see.”

Racing & Sports’ expert Adam Blencowe says there are similar lines to draw on the pairing.

“Sir Davy and Tuvalu both have the fine distinction of having beaten an on-song Visinari and both did so producing nearly identical performances,” he said.

“Sir Davy’s ratings spiral came to a halt last time, however, and it seems that Tuvalu is the one with more to come now.

“He has run beyond a rating of 100 five times to Sir Davy’s two. Of course, Sir Davy does have the might of Maher and Eustace in his corner.”

Also among the nominations for the Winter Championship is recent Swan Hill Cup winner Paul’s Regret, the Ben and JD Hayes-trained Biometric, and Grahame Begg’s Lunar Flare.
