Conditions rather than barrier draws may ultimately determine which of Peter Snowden’s mares fares best in the Hawkesbury Crown (1300m) on Saturday, as both Coco Jamboo and Tashi head to the race in solid form.
Reigning titleholder Coco Jamboo drew awkwardly in barrier 17 but could move into 13 with scratchings, while Tashi will jump from gate two. However, with the track rated heavy, outside draws may not be a disadvantage.
“Both are in good order and handle the wet,” Snowden said. “There’s not a lot between them, but Coco Jamboo has been really consistent and gets in well under the set weights.”
Coco Jamboo resumed with a placing in the Birthday Card Stakes and wasn’t far away when fifth in the Sapphire Stakes, finishing just over a length from the winner.
Tashi ran fourth in the Sapphire Stakes and has finished in the placings four times at Stakes level without a breakthrough win.
“She’s tried so hard and been a bit unlucky at times,” Snowden said. “She ran third in the Guy Walter and gave it everything. I’d love to see her land a deserved win.”
Tashi is an $8 chance in the market, while Coco Jamboo sits at $9.50. Belclare leads betting at $3.60 for Bjorn Baker.
Snowden has won the race four times since 2011 and will be looking to add a fifth Hawkesbury Crown to his resume on Saturday.
