Sons And Lovers enters 2025 Melbourne Cup picture

Sons And Lovers has emerged as a genuine Spring Carnival contender after a gritty Ballyroan Stakes (2414m) win at Leopardstown on Thursday night, local time.

Trained by Joseph O’Brien, the four-year-old earned crucial qualification for the Melbourne Cup with his Group 3 success, boosting his credentials for a trip to Australia.

“It absolutely could be,” O’Brien said when asked about a Melbourne campaign. “He’s now a Group winner, which was necessary to qualify, and there are also other races globally that might suit.”

The son of Study Of Man is owned by the same syndicate that campaigns Absurde, a consistent performer in the last two Melbourne Cups under Willie Mullins.

Sons And Lovers took out the Ballyroan by half a length over Crystal Black, with Siege Of Troy finishing a close third. His recent form includes a strong effort in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot and a placing in the Alleged Stakes, trailing Caulfield Cup hopeful Galen.

“He’s run well in tough races this season,” O’Brien said. “The Wolferton didn’t suit tactically, but stepping up in trip should really help him continue to progress.”

Sons And Lovers has already been entered for the Caulfield Cup and is expected to be among Melbourne Cup nominations when they close next month.

“The plan is to return here for the Kilternan Stakes over 2400m on September 13, and from there, we’ll assess our travel options,” O’Brien said.
