Securing Sydney Saturday earnings prior to an extensive spring slate influenced David Payne’s decision for another run with Bangkok Hottie, who responded with a commanding success at Randwick.
The trainer had earmarked a spell for the filly after her midweek maiden at Warwick Farm, though owner-breeder John Thompson, a faithful patron, encouraged one last effort.
“I was going to put her out and John said to me, \”David, give her another run. Try to get some more stakes\”,\” Payne said.
\”She can go out now. She is a very good filly.
\”The Princess Series for the fillies (will be the goal). She’ll get a mile on her ear, so we’ll aim her for that.\”
With Ash Morgan in the saddle, late money made Bangkok Hottie the $3.90 top pick; she stalked the pace and quickened decisively to annex Saturday’s HMAS Sydney Handicap (1100m) by 2-1/4 lengths from Keen To Exceed ($17) on debut, ahead of Extremely Tempted ($4) in third, a half-length adrift.
Delighted with his niche stable’s latest find boasting stakes credentials, Payne reflected positively.
\”Nobody wanted to ride her today. They will all be wanting to ride her now,\” he said.
\”She’s special. She is bombproof too, and she’s got a turn of foot.
\”We don’t get many horses. We’ve only got twenty, so now we can at least take them on again.\”
Payne and longtime client Thompson share a history of wins, such as 2023 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes hero Navajo Peak.
In August, the four-part Princess Series launches with the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) en route to the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).
