The team of David Brideoake and Matt Jenkins is already casting an eye to spring following Prestige Snitzel’s impressive maiden win at Mornington on Saturday.
The filly took out the Mornington Sires (1200m) in convincing fashion, backing up her Group 3 placing in the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington last month with a dominant performance.
Ridden by Jamie Mott and sent out as the $3.10 market elect, Prestige Snitzel crossed from a wide draw to settle just off the speed before surging clear at the 200m. She scored by 2¼ lengths over Toronado Queen ($4), while Casual Ghai ($6.50) filled third, a further 1½ lengths away.
With a view to the future, Brideoake confirmed that the promising juvenile will now enjoy a break in preparation for a spring campaign.
“I think she will be a filly that will stay, and could get out to a mile in the spring,” Brideoake said. “She can have a rest now and see what the spring brings.”
The filly became the third ‘Prestige’ two-year-old winner for the stable in recent weeks, underlining the strength of their current young crop.
“We’ve got a good team, and we’ve got some pretty good stock at the moment,” Brideoake said. “It all adds up and the rewards are good.”
Brideoake was also full of praise for Mott’s ride from a tricky draw.
“I liked the ride. After they had gone probably 300 metres, Jamie was positioned up pretty damn well,” he said. “We had to see how much the others had to offer at the testing time, and she was good enough.”
“She was race savvy and race hardened, so she had the advantage.”
Mott, who had previously partnered the filly, said she was showing signs of maturity but was still learning her craft.
“Even though she was a bit more switched on today, she was shying at everything going to the barrier and after the race,” Mott said. “She’s still got a bit of a baby brain, but she gives you a great feel and hopefully she can stretch out in distance and if she can, she will be a serious horse.”
