Chris Waller is hoping lightning can strike twice as Autumn Boy aims to emulate his sire The Autumn Sun in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill.
Like his father, Autumn Boy was unbeaten at two before tasting defeat first-up as a three-year-old, finishing second to stablemate Sixties in the Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m).
The Autumn Sun also suffered a defeat at his first start back at three before reeling off five straight wins, four at the elite level, to establish himself as one of Australia’s best.
Waller sees clear similarities between the two horses.
“His demeanour and he is also a very similar type,” Waller said.
“The Autumn Sun had an amazing attitude towards life. He enjoyed every minute of it and he showed that in his racing.
“He tried hard and he was a pleasure to deal with and this is a carbon copy.”
Blinkers will be added to Autumn Boy’s gear, just as they were for The Autumn Sun’s successful Golden Rose bid.
“When you’re getting old you follow old traditions and we did it with The Autumn Sun,” Waller said. “But I do think it will help him over 1400.”
Autumn Boy will be one of four Waller-trained runners in the Golden Rose, joined by Wodeton, Sixties and Beiwacht.
“If I could have picked their draws, I would have picked close to what they’ve got,” Waller said. “The draws will suit their racing styles.”
Markets have Autumn Boy on the second line of betting at $4.60, behind Ciaron Maher’s filly Tempted at $2.80. Wodeton is $5, Beiwacht $9, and Sixties sits at $16.
