Ballymore Stable lands emotional double at Caulfield

Although the pain of losing Mike Moroney remains, a winning double at Caulfield on Saturday served as a tribute to his enduring influence on the racing world.

The Ballymore Stables at Flemington are now under the guidance of Glen Thompson, who officially joined Moroney in a training partnership at the beginning of the season.

While Racing Australia formally recognized the change on Friday, Moroney’s name still appeared in Saturday’s race programs.

The stable’s first victory came with Bankers Choice in the DCE Handicap (2400m), followed by another success when Benagil surged home to win the VOBIS Platinum Guineas (1600m).

Longtime racing manager Anthony Feroce acknowledged the emotions surrounding the stable as they continue to adjust after Moroney’s passing two weeks ago.

“It’s a really special moment,” Feroce said after Bankers Choice’s win.

“Mike’s memorial was on Tuesday, and his funeral will be in New Zealand on Monday. To get a win today is a wonderful way to honor him.

“For Glen, this marks the beginning of his solo training career, and it’s fantastic to see him start on such a high note.”

Feroce mentioned that Bankers Choice is likely to target the Listed Warrnambool Cup (2350m) in May.

Meanwhile, Thompson was in Rosehill overseeing Coeur Volante’s run in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic as Benagil put in a stunning performance, coming from the back of the field to secure victory in the VOBIS Platinum Guineas.

Originally, the filly was slated to contest the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1600m) at Flemington last weekend, but Feroce explained that they made a strategic decision to change course.

“We had planned to run last week, but after assessing the field, we didn’t think we could get past Matt Laurie’s outstanding filly, so we opted to come here instead. It’s worked out perfectly,” Feroce said.

“The long-term plan has always been the Australasian Oaks in Adelaide, so we’ll regroup with Phil (Campbell) and decide on our next steps.”
