Joe Pride sends multiple Group 1 conqueror Private Eye as his feature runner to Doomben, confident that barnmate The Black Cloud will provide solid support.
The evergreen Private Eye lines up in the $1.5 million Doomben 10,000 (1200m), while The Black Cloud makes the northern trek for her shot in the Listed Magic Millions Bright Shadow (1110m) on the card’s support races.
Although new to the Doomben circuit, the mare has a proven affinity for travel and delivers strong results on the move.
“She has travelled really well in the past. She’s won at Flemington, she’s won at Eagle Farm, she has placed at Caulfield,” the Sydney-based Pride said.
“Whenever I’ve travelled her away she has always raced well.”
With five successes from 19 appearances, The Black Cloud has thrived four times on sodden surfaces.
The venue rated soft on Wednesday, poised to offer some cushion, yet Pride highlighted additional positives beyond the weather.
“And being fresh. Fresh, short-course, bit of a wet track,” he said.
“She has got all those things in her favour. She seems to race best like that.”
The mare, successful in stakes company at Eagle Farm last December, has Nash Rawiller aboard from the ideal barrier one.
She returns fresh off a solid showing, missing by just over a length to Marhoona in the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) in March, and steps down in quality for the Bright Shadow despite extra weight.
“It’s good form for a Listed race in Brisbane, so she lines up well in this,” Pride said.
Pride is pleased with Private Eye’s condition entering the Doomben 10,000, building on his third placing behind Mazu in the King’s Secret Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) from April 18.
“I couldn’t be happier with him. It’s a Group One race, they’re never easy, but he’s in great shape,” Pride said.
