Star US galloper joins Maher stable to target the Queen Anne Stakes

Connections at Ciaron Maher Racing have pulled off a major international coup with the purchase of Carl Spackler, a three-time Grade 1 winner from the United States, who is being aimed at the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The son of Lope De Vega came to Maher’s attention following his 2023 Kentucky Derby visit, which opened the door to relationships that helped broker the deal. Carl Spackler will race in Yulong’s colours at Ascot and is then set to head to Australia with the Cox Plate the primary target.

“We’ve had US horses on the radar since Lighthouse,” said Will Bourne of Maher Racing. “Carl Spackler is a natural fit – he’s by Lope De Vega, he’s tough, fast, and suited to our firm surfaces.”

Bourne noted that Maher worked tirelessly through international vetting and negotiation processes to secure the horse. “There were a lot of late nights, but Ciaron got it done,” he said.

Carl Spackler’s proven ability on turf and his powerful finish make him an exciting addition to the stable. He’ll arrive in the UK later this week to begin preparations for his Royal Ascot debut.

With the Cox Plate in sight, Carl Spackler is already rated a $21 chance with online bookmaker swiftbet.
