Phillip Stokes concedes that Stretan Angel presents her share of quirks, but he’s confident the mare has another strong showing in her as she lines up for the $1 million The Meteorite at Cranbourne this weekend.
The Meteorite (1200m) is entering its second year as a Southside Racing slot race, joining The Supernova (1400m) at Pakenham as part of a lucrative two-day racing offering across both venues.
A consistent Group 1 performer, Stretan Angel snapped a long run of outs with victory in the Listed Alinghi Stakes (1100m) before an off-day in the Group 3 Kirin Ichiban Sprint (1100m) during Cup week.
Despite that effort, Stokes insists she has bounced through the run in good order.
“She’s been like that for the last two years,” Stokes said.
“We gave her some fast work Saturday morning and everything says she’s going as good as ever.
“She’s run some slashing races at the elite level, but I feel she’s still there. If she can get the race run to suit, she will run a good race.”
Her original engagement was the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m), but the opportunity to race for a $1 million pot saw plans change quickly.
“When they rang us up and gave us the offer, we thought, why not?” Stokes said.
“It’s worth a lot of money. She’s got a lot of black type already, so we’ll chase the money.”
The Cranbourne chute start over 1200m mirrors the Caulfield setup, something Stokes feels could help produce the right race shape for her.
“Good speed. Good speed and clear room – that’s what she needs.”
With Stretan Angel sitting at $13 for The Meteorite and Zou Sensation the $4.50 favourite, punters can compare bookies at the JHR bookmakers comparison page.
