Stokes and Neindorf previously won the Group 1 Sangster Stakes together in Adelaide, and Neindorf remains a key jockey for Stokes’ stable.

Originally, Stokes expected Stretan Angel to carry around 52kg in Saturday’s Group 1 1200m sprint at Flemington. However, with several expected contenders opting out, topweight Jimmysstar (Oakleigh Plate winner) was assigned 58kg, pushing weights up across the field.

As a result, Stretan Angel will carry 55.5kg—3.5kg more than expected—but Neindorf remains aboard.

Neindorf partnered Stretan Angel to a second-place finish behind Skybird in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) on February 15.

“He’s got plenty of confidence going in,” Stokes said.

“He’s riding well for us, and we’re happy to have him on board. We initially booked him thinking she’d get 52kg, but she’s carrying a bit more.”

Stretan Angel has won just twice—first in a Listed race at Morphettville in April 2023 and later in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington.

She has finished runner-up in two Group 1 events, including The Goodwood in Adelaide (beaten by Benedetta, a Saturday rival) and again in the Lightning Stakes first-up this prep.

Her performance in the Lightning Stakes confirmed her strong form.

“She returned even better than expected first-up,” Stokes said.

“I thought she’d be in the top four, but running second was a great result.

“She’s second-up now, and she loves the straight. It’s a tougher race, but she meets the same rivals at better weights.

“The 1200 meters is her ideal trip, so we’re excited for Saturday.”
