La Fracas may be bound for Sydney this weekend, with Mick Price leaning towards running the consistent gelding at Randwick instead of Moonee Valley due to expected heavy ground conditions.
Nominated for two 1200m races — a benchmark 84 at the Valley and a benchmark 78 in Sydney — Price, who trains in partnership with Michael Kent Jnr, will make a final call after fields are released midweek.
Unbeaten in three starts this prep, La Fracas has demonstrated an affinity for rain-affected going with back-to-back wins on heavy tracks before charging home late to win at Flemington on July 19.
The gelding was put through a reverse-way gallop on Saturday, handled by stable apprentice Olivia East, to test his suitability for Sydney’s clockwise racing direction.
“He’s nominated for Sydney and we gave him a gallop that way on Saturday because he’s such a good wet tracker, and Sydney’s been copping a lot of rain,” Price said.
East, who recently returned from a collarbone injury sustained at Werribee, said the gelding impressed with how he handled the right-handed gallop.
“He felt terrific — really strong in his work,” East said.
Although the stable initially considered the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield next Saturday, Price said a conversation with Blake Shinn prompted a rethink due to the strength of potential opposition.
“I floated the idea of the Regal Roller, but after chatting with Blake and knowing a few top-rated horses are headed there, we decided to look elsewhere,” Price explained.
While La Fracas ran over a mile last campaign, Price is keeping him to 1200m this prep while he remains fresh, also noting that tight Moonee Valley barriers could be problematic for the big-striding galloper.
“We’ll accept for both and weigh it up,” Price said. “If he draws inside at the Valley, that might not be ideal for him as he’s a horse that takes time to wind up.”
Rated 83, La Fracas has been given 62.5kg in the Randwick benchmark 78 and 59.5kg in the Moonee Valley benchmark 84.
