The Anthony and Sam Freedman stable is confident that talented colt Tentyris is on track for a serious tilt at the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) after a strong victory in the Listed Gothic Stakes at Caulfield.

Tentyris, who missed the Golden Slipper earlier this year due to a stress fracture, has been the focus of a long-term plan by the Freedman team and Godolphin. That plan came closer to fruition on Saturday as the colt unleashed a devastating sprint to score under jockey Mark Zahra.

After returning heavier than expected from his spell and finishing third when resuming in the Danehill Stakes (1100m) at Flemington, Tentyris stripped fitter for his second-up run. Starting the $2.25 favourite, he came from near last to mow down Raging Force ($4.40) by a long neck, with Sheeza Alibi ($16) a further 1½ lengths away in third.

“It was pretty gutting to miss the Slipper as a two-year-old, as we felt like he was the best chance we had in that race,” co-trainer Sam Freedman said.

“Hopefully it turns out to be a blessing in disguise. He’s more mature now, and the Coolmore has always been his target. He’s shaping up beautifully for that.”

Freedman said Tentyris had returned from his long layoff carrying 30 kilograms of extra condition, requiring months of careful work to get him back to peak race fitness.

“It’s been a real project for everyone at home to get the weight off him and build his fitness gradually,” Freedman said. “He’s not fully wound up yet, but that win today will bring him on nicely. We’re thrilled with where he’s at heading into Flemington.”

Freedman confirmed Tentyris would remain at Mornington for his final preparations ahead of the Coolmore Stud Stakes on the opening day of Melbourne Cup week.

“He’s best when ridden quietly and allowed to explode late — that’s his style,” he said. “We’ve discussed that approach a lot with Mark, and today’s ride was spot on.”
