The Inferno set to tackle the Black Caviar Lightning first-up

By RS NewsWire on 09/02/2022 at 4:59 pm
Filled in: News - Black Caviar Lightning Stakes

Trainer Cliff Brown would like a set of horse scales to weigh his stable star The Inferno before the sprinter makes his racetrack return in the Lightning Stakes.

The former Singapore galloper is about to embark on his second campaign in Australia with the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday week his return run.

The Inferno will be pitted against the likes of Nature Strip, Eduardo, Profiteer and Gytrash in the in 1000m dash, but Brown said it was nice starting point for the sprinter.

After winning over 1000m at The Valley last September, The Inferno ran second in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at that track and has not been sighted since finishing tenth to Nature Strip in The Everest (1200m) at Randwick in October.

The subsequent break has allowed The Inferno to fill out and mature and Brown said it would be interesting to see what he tips the scales at nowadays.

All horses were weighed before they raced in Singapore with their weights recorded.

“I’d love to know what he weighs, but I don’t have any scales,” Brown said.

“He was around 565 to 570 (kilos) from memory when he raced up there.”

The Inferno had a barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday, finishing sixth to King Magnus over 990m under Damian Lane.

Brown was happy with the trial although he was lamenting the lack of speed early in the trial.

“Damian said he relaxed more than he thought he would,” Brown said.

“They walked early then they sprinted home. He got a long way back, but he said he was good late.

“Maybe if they had been a bit more genuine through the trial, he probably trials a bit better, but overall that was OK.”

After running in the Lightning Stakes, Brown said plans were for The Inferno to head back to The Valley for the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 25.
