Few would argue that a mare in peak form should be sent for a spell, and Samangu proved why after charging home to claim victory at Caulfield despite a tricky run.
Recording her fifth win in just seven starts, Samangu stormed to success in the The Mystic Journey (1100m) on Saturday.
Trained by Grahame Begg, Samangu kicked off her campaign last October, with her latest win making it five from six well-managed races.
Guided by Jordan Childs, betting sites favorite Samangu ($2.90) finished three-quarters of a length ahead of Roll On High ($17), with She Dances ($7.50) close behind in third.
When questioned about her next move, Begg confirmed she would now be spelled.
“She’s been in work a long time, so she’s done a damn good job,” Begg said.
“She won her maiden last spring, and we spaced her races, but today she looked better than ever.
“Each outing, she’s improving, showing greater composure on race day.
“She’s only four, and when she returns as a five-year-old, she’ll be more seasoned. Her only defeat this prep came at Flemington when tackling the straight for the first time.
“She’s done a damn good job. The owners have been very patient with her as she had a few little maturity issues early doors.
“She’s overcome those, and she’s been able to sustain a full preparation.”
Begg suspected that Samangu didn’t entirely enjoy being surrounded by other horses.
However, once she found clear space, she effortlessly reeled in the front-runners, displaying her growing racecraft.
“We’ve been waiting for the chance to let her follow a horse into the race because except for her maiden, she’s been leading every time,” Begg said.
“It was fantastic. She’s a bloody good mare and I’ll tell you what, winners win.”
