Ciaron Maher may be on holiday, but his racing team remains fully engaged ahead of Flemington Finals Day, boasting strong chances across several features.
Detonator Jack returns in the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m) as he aims to recapture the form that saw him win The Gong (1600m) last year.
His recent form has come in tougher races, including the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) and the $1 million 7+ Sport Stakes.
“Detonator Jack ran really well first-up but he got a long way back,” said Leigh Allen from the Maher camp.
“We thought he was a bit under what he normally is on returning but we can forgive him being a that far off them.”
“He’s been consistently running against black-type and group company, so he will know the difference here.”
He faces a deep field with favourite Oh Too Good installed at $2.70 and Detonator Jack at $16.
In the Listed Creswick Stakes (1200m), unbeaten filly She’s An Artist is a major contender after a commanding Flemington win last start.
“We gave her that look down the straight and she seemed to tick every box there,” Allen said.
“We were surprised with how well she won, not that she won… she should be winning again.
“We were going to go straight into the Creswick after her Bendigo win but we did that with Pharari last year and it backfired, so we’ve learned.”
The team is also confident in Shockletz stepping up in the Mahogany Challenge Final (2500m), believing the staying distance and weight drop will suit the daughter of Melbourne Cup hero Shocking.
