Top fillies on G1 Surround Stakes collision course

Highly regarded fillies Tempted and Apocalyptic are on separate lead-up paths but are expected to clash later in the autumn in the Surround Stakes.

Tempted, second to Ka Ying Rising in The Everest, will make her seasonal return in a 1000m Group Trial at Randwick, while Apocalyptic resumes over 900 metres.

The pair were among the standout fillies of their generation last spring but have yet to face each other.

Michael Freedman confirmed Apocalyptic will resume in the Light Fingers Stakes, with the Surround Stakes to follow.

Ciaron Maher’s assistant Jo Gerard-Dubord said Tempted would kick off a week earlier in the Eskimo Prince Stakes.

“She’s had a jump-out at Bong Bong, so we are just repeating what we did last prep,” Gerard-Dubord said.

“She will trial over 1000 metres on Tuesday and then she’s likely to start in the Eskimo Prince.

“The Surround looks the logical second run.”

Gerard-Dubord added that Tempted had strengthened since the spring.

“She is about fifteen kilos heavier than last prep and has really furnished,” he said.

“She’s come back in great order.”
