The memory of an unlucky debut is now well behind the ownership group of Tornado Valley, with the promising colt breaking through in style in Tuesday’s Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington.
The Ciaron Maher-trained youngster, a son of Too Darn Hot, improved sharply off his first-up third in the Listed Debutant Stakes at Caulfield on October 15, showing professionalism and acceleration to take out the $240,000 Group 3 with Ethan Brown aboard.
There was a moment of tension after the race when Ben Melham, rider of runner-up Tales Of Time, lodged a protest alleging interference mid-race. After reviewing the footage, stewards dismissed the objection and confirmed Tornado Valley as the winner.
Maher said it was satisfying to see the colt enjoy clearer running than he did on debut and hinted that a summer trip north may now be strongly considered.
“It was just like a barrier trial, really,” Maher said of that first run.
“I thought he was a bit sleepy out of the gates, wobbled at the turn and was very good late.
“This colt is very well-bred and he’s got a bright future.
“Magic Millions is hard to pass up and he is progressive. (They’re) nice options to have.”
The $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 11 now looms as a likely long-term target.
Tornado Valley ($5) narrowly held off Tales Of Time ($18), with Luna Vega ($10) finishing a further length and a half behind in third.
Brown, taking over from Mark Zahra, said the colt showed maturity and talent.
“He probably hit the front a bit soon, but I just had to use him just to get out in clear running,” Brown said.
“He’s very responsive, he had a good look at the crowd, and he won with a bit in hand.
“He was just very green his first-up run, and it’s a sign of a good horse. He’s taken the right improvement.”
