Tralee Rose on track for autumn return

Trainer Symon Wilde may give his first Melbourne Cup runner a cameo appearance in late autumn after her recovery from injury.

Tralee Rose finished ninth behind Verry Elleegant in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 2 after being galloped on.

After treatment at the Werribee Equine Hospital, Tralee Rose was boxed early in her recovery before being moved to a small yard.

She has since been moved into a roomy paddock to continue her recovery.

Wilde said the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m) at Flemington in May, in which the winner gains a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup, could be a race Tralee Rose runs in.

“She’s been through her five-week box rest period of being bandaged and then on to a small yard where we continued to bandage her,” Wilde told RSN.

“Everything went really well. The skin took hold, the stitches held, and she’s been now about 10 days in the big paddock.

“We’re not sure whether we’ll give her a long break and just focus on the spring or whether she’ll come back for a late autumn cameo in something like the Andrew Ramsden.”

Meanwhile his dual Grand Annual Steeplechase winner Gold Medals is in pre-training with Lee Evison ahead of his final campaign.

The 12-year-old has competed four times in Australia’s toughest race at Warrnambool, winning twice and finishing runner-up on the other two occasions.

Wilde said Gold Medals had spelled well and would be prepared for a fifth shot at the Grand Annual before retirement due to his age.

“If there are any signs of any problems he’ll be retired, but if he’s as well as he was last year we’ll give him one last spin,” Wilde said.

“He’s done a terrific job.”
