Matt Laurie says Treasurethe Moment is in peak condition ahead of her final Cox Plate lead-up, though he concedes the tiny field for Saturday’s Group 1 Might And Power (2000m) at Caulfield isn’t ideal.
Just five horses accepted for the race, and with Light Infantry Man likely to run in Sydney’s Hill Stakes (1900m), the field could shrink to four. That would leave Treasurethe Moment and Buckaroo as the key contenders, with Globe and Hezashoka completing the line-up.
“I would prefer to have a few more runners in the race, but it is what it is,” Laurie told SEN. “I guess Globe will take up the running and we’ll be following it with the others behind. It’s a bit unusual, but hopefully it works out.”
The mare’s remarkable nine-race winning streak ended when Pride Of Jenni outgunned her in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) last month. Laurie revealed that a brief colic episode in the lead-up may have taken its toll, but said she has since improved dramatically.
“She’s come on a lot and the equimetre data from her last couple of gallops confirmed it,” Laurie said. “Up to 2000 metres will be perfect for her, and I’d expect Buckaroo to make it a genuine contest. Her work this week was excellent.”
While not the preferred Cox Plate rehearsal, Laurie said the lucrative prizemoney makes the race worth targeting. “It’s not the makeup we’d have chosen, but it’s still a $1 million race. She’s well, she’s happy, and it’ll be a good test before The Valley.”
Damian Lane, who boasts a perfect seven-from-seven record aboard Treasurethe Moment, reunites with her for Saturday’s feature after missing her last start due to suspension.
