UK adventure follows TJ Smith Stakes for peaking Joliestar

Five-year-old Joliestar is operating at elite level, as her trainer Chris Waller notes through her dependable performances.

The mare goes for three in a row in Saturday’s T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, a first for her in one preparation.

She’s delivered top-shelf racing since three, though complete campaign form has been elusive – changing now.

“I can’t fault her. She is two from two this ‘prep’, and she is a confident lady who is taking the next step with consistency,” Waller said.

“You just see that with more mature horses. That’s the difference between your five-year-olds and your four-year-olds.

“Your four-year-olds still do a few little things wrong, but the five-year-olds, they know what they’re doing. They can race themselves.”

She launched back strongly, defeating Caballus (subsequent Newmarket Handicap hero) in the Expressway Stakes (1200m), then powered home in the Canterbury Stakes (1300m).

Nearing the T J Smith with about a month off, rest that has sparked her in prior instances.

Looking past Sydney’s autumn, Waller eyes an English campaign for Joliestar come their summer kickoff.

A week away after Saturday, then onto Melbourne for sessions and trials at Flemington’s straight to match foreign conditions.

Waller’s priority is the T J Smith Stakes, Joliestar at $4.40 third in ante-post markets, back of Tentyris ($3, 3yo fav) and Jimmysstar ($4).

Three-year-old Tentyris targets history, becoming the first youngster to down the elders since Trapeze Artist’s 2018 feat.
