Via Sistina wins second Group 1 Champions Stakes

Via Sistina showcased her class yet again, claiming her 12th Group 1 victory with a commanding display to defend her title in the Group 1 Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

Despite the heavy track, the reigning Australian horse of the year travelled sweetly three-wide with cover under James McDonald before powering clear in the straight.

The $1.80 favourite drew away to score by 2-3/4 lengths over the underrated Zambardo ($14), with Tom Kitten ($10) shading Pier ($7.50) for the final place on the podium.

Fresh from her second consecutive W S Cox Plate win, Chris Waller reflected on the mare’s longevity and professionalism.

“She was really tough. James didn’t rush her, and she was so strong late,” Waller said.

He credited Yu Long Investments for their commitment to racing her in Australia.

“They love their racing and they’ve given the public something special to follow. It’s been a big day with Ceolwulf, Giga Kick and now Via Sistina.”

The victory also marked a significant milestone: the 50th Group 1 victory for the Waller–McDonald partnership.

“Working with James is a privilege. No pressure, no stress — he knows what to do,” Waller said.

McDonald said Via Sistina’s record speaks for itself.

“She’s earned that champion tag. She’s right there with some of the best we’ve ever seen.”
