After stepping in to deliver Godolphin a memorable Golden Rose victory earlier this spring, Chris Waller will link with Sheikh Mohammed’s powerhouse stable again when he sends Burma Star into the $400,000 Sandown Guineas at Caulfield.
Burma Star is one of two Waller-trained runners in the 1600m Group 2, joined by fellow colt Pictor, who carries the colours of Yulong.
The Sandown Guineas was a regular showcase event for Godolphin throughout the 2000s and 2010s, with standout winners including Caymans, Kidnapped, Paximadia, Morton’s Fork and Tatra. Waller won the race once, back in 2010 with Pressday — and he’d love to do it again.
“His record is better than mine, so it’s good to link up with him,” Waller said with a laugh.
“I remember we won one once many years ago with a horse called Pressday, but that team’s going great and it’s good to be part of it.”
Waller’s historic Group 1 win with Beiwacht in this year’s Golden Rose marked the first time any trainer had claimed a major with a horse previously prepared by James Cummings.
Since joining Waller, Burma Star has shown rapid development. After placing second first-up, he broke his maiden at Warwick Farm before another second at Rosehill. He then claimed the Listed Springtime Stakes (1400m) on Melbourne Cup Day — the key run that booked his passage into the Guineas.
“He’s come through that well, he’s a really neat horse with a great action and is very professional,” Waller said.
“He just goes to sleep in his races and likewise trackwork, so he looks after himself and turns up on raceday.”
Joao Moreira delivered the Springtime Stakes win, but Ben Melham takes over the reins for Saturday’s assignment from gate three.
Jamie Melham will ride Pictor, who finished just over a length behind Burma Star last start and has drawn barrier nine.
