Waller keeping faith in Joliestar in All Aged Stakes

Chris Waller remains optimistic about Joliestar’s chances in the All Aged Stakes (1400m) despite her recent loss in the T J Smith Stakes, where she finished ninth behind Briasa.

The leading trainer believes Joliestar didn’t get a fair crack at the race, with jockey Damian Lane forced to navigate through traffic on an unfavourable part of the Randwick track.

“Damian had nowhere to go and he had to go up the fence,” Waller said.

“There was no pressure in the race. He couldn’t push out. He had to go where no other horse had been on the day and it was slower there.”

Before her last start, Joliestar claimed the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in impressive style and boasts a strong Randwick record with two wins at the venue.

Zac Lloyd takes the reins this time with Damian Lane suspended, and Waller expects a smoother run from barrier nine.

“Barrier nine probably suits her, we won’t get the same excuse,” Waller said.

“I think 1400 metres is probably the right distance for her too.

“I’m not panicked. She is good enough to win. She just needs a little bit of luck on race day.”

Osipenko, another Waller runner, resumes in the same feature race following his victory in the January Cup (2000m). Saturday’s run is expected to be a stepping stone for future assignments.

“He’s a neat old horse. He is getting ready for the Hollindale (Stakes).”
