Firestorm is unlikely to contest the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) this weekend after trainer Chris Waller expressed concern about her wide draw in barrier 16, leaning instead toward the Dane Ripper Stakes (1300m).
While the mare was initially targeted for the Group 1, Waller said the tough gate has changed his thinking.
“If she had a good draw she would definitely be running (in the Stradbroke),” Waller said.
“She is good fresh and she has won a Group Two over 1300 metres and run second in a Coolmore (Classic) beaten a nose.
“My gut tells me, leave the Stradbroke, run her in the Dane Ripper and that will have her peaking for the Tatt’s Tiara in two weeks.”
A decision will be finalised by Wednesday’s 5pm deadline.
If Firestorm switches to the Dane Ripper, Waller’s lineup will include Olentia, Konasana, and potentially Gumdrops, who is also engaged in a Listed race on the card.
The move would also allow Coleman, currently listed as the first emergency, to take a place in the Stradbroke field. He showed a return to form last start with a stakes placing at Eagle Farm.
Waller isn’t fazed by Coleman’s outside draw of 23, believing it may actually suit him.
“He ran second in a Golden Slipper when Kerrin rode him and he rode him last start as well and said he’s probably a horse that would appreciate a bit of room,” Waller said.
“He’s going well and the 1400 will suit him better.”
Coleman, who joined Waller earlier this year, has already proven his credentials at the trip with a Group 1 placing in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
