Chris Waller’s stable stars are firmly aimed at the Winx Stakes, but the leading trainer will also have a hand in Melbourne’s early spring features.
The $300,000 Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield this Saturday is expected to attract several of Waller’s American imports racing in Yulong colours, with final acceptances yet to be decided.
Among his five entries are Moira, Full Count Felicia and Anisette, along with Land Legend and More Felons. Waller believes the mares may appreciate Melbourne’s left-handed tracks.
Running them in Melbourne would also see them avoid a tough first-up clash with stablemates Via Sistina, Fangirl, Lady Shenandoah and Aeliana in the $1 million Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) on August 23.
“From what I’ve seen at home, they’re a little bit better left-handed and that would take the pressure off our system a little bit as well,” Waller said.
Anisette, a three-time Group 1 winner between 1811m and 2012m in the United States, has been based at Flemington. Her only Australian run came in the Doncaster Mile earlier this year, where she finished last.
Moira, who also contested that Doncaster and finished 14th, was a Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Fillies & Mares (2213m) winner at her last U.S. start. The Ghostzapper mare had finished second to Full Count Felicia at Woodbine the start prior.
Full Count Felicia, by War Front, has seven career wins and ran fourth in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) in her only Australian appearance.
All three mares have trialled twice quietly in Sydney in readiness for spring. They were also among Waller’s nominations for both the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup.
In early markets for the Lawrence Stakes, Moira is rated a $15 chance, ahead of Full Count Felicia ($21) and Anisette ($34), with Evaporate favourite at $3 and Private Eye next at $4.
