Katherine Coleman is expecting a big party after the Peter Moody stable claimed two Stakes races in different states.
A little over 20 minutes after I Wish I Win came from last to win the Group 1 T J Smith (1200m) at Randwick, the beautifully bred Waltz On By claimed the Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m).
Coleman said she had not spoken to Moody in the moments after I Wish I Win’s victory.
“I haven’t yet, but I think it’s going to be a pretty special phone call when I do,” Coleman said after Waltz On By’s victory.
Ridden by Billy Egan, Waltz On By ($10) scored by a neck from Running By ($10) with Elkington Road ($9) a further three-quarters-of-a-length away third.
“She’s a filly we’ve always had a massive opinion of,” Coleman said.
“But we’ve just had to be patient with her, because she’s not the easiest horse. She’s a horse that you’ve just got to work with because she can be quite difficult and quite opinionated.
“Today she’s done a great job, it’s great for her pedigree and great for connections in Arrowfield Stud.”
Waltz On By is a daughter of Stay With Me who in turn is a daughter of Miss Finland, both winners of the Group 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield.
The filly was racing third-up on Saturday having had two runs over 1200m in the lead-up.
Coleman said the rise in trip to 1400m on Saturday was ideal for Waltz On By.
“She was good second-up, but she just looked like she wanted that further step up in trip, so today we thought she gets that,” Coleman said.
“She got every opportunity from that ride and it just worked out perfectly.”
Egan completed a winning double having scored earlier on Foxy Frida in the Bendigo Gold Bracelet.
The jockey only returned from seven months on the sidelines following a fall at Flemington last week and Saturday’s double was his third winner back.
Egan was concerned when Waltz On By struck the front in the straight that she may have been vulnerable late in the race.
“The way she travelled into the straight, she travelled in like a really nice horse,” Egan said.
“She didn’t have the finishing touches on top of that, but with a little bit of maturity she’ll come good.”
