Trainer Robert Heathcote has hailed Rothfire’s toughness and resilience after the gallant Queenslander stormed to victory in Saturday’s $2 million Sydney Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, under the guidance of Hong Kong-based star Zac Purton.
The win ended a long 23-month drought for the gelding, who hadn’t tasted success since 2022. It also added another emotional chapter to Rothfire’s extraordinary career — one marked by injury, recovery, and relentless determination.
“It means so much because the journey that this horse has taken us on — I’ve had him in three Everests,” Heathcote said. “We could have been 35 minutes away from his fourth but I’ll take this consolation.”
“He injured himself in the Golden Rose five years ago and it took us 18 months to get him back. People ask what is the biggest win in your life and I always say ‘Buff’ (Buffering) winning in Dubai, but this goes right up there close with all he’s been through.”
Rothfire ($13) forced his way through a tight gap late to beat Iowna Merc ($21) by a short neck, with With Your Blessing ($20) third. Heathcote said the horse’s earlier efforts this season — particularly in the Doomben 10,000 and Manikato Stakes — had him primed for this breakthrough.
Heathcote also revealed that Nash Rawiller played a surprising role in securing Purton for the Sydney Stakes ride. “I have to thank Nash — he said, ‘Zac won’t have a ride and I’ll call him to tell him to ride this horse.’ That shows the spirit of racing,” he said.
At eight years old, Rothfire’s longevity continues to impress, and Heathcote dismissed any talk of retirement. “He’s defied veterinary critics for so long and here he is winning a $2 million race,” the trainer said. “He’s as tough as they come.”
