Trainer Chris Waller is hoping for another standout performance from Ahuriri when she lines up in the PF Civil Handicap (2400m) at Randwick on Saturday, with heavy ground once again expected.
The mare, who broke a lengthy drought with a determined win over 1900m at Canterbury on a heavy 9, rises in distance for her third-up assignment. The 2024 VRC St Leger winner has the stamina for the staying test, and Waller is confident she’ll handle the conditions.
“She’s proven on wet ground and brings a strong staying profile,” Waller said. “This time of year, that’s what you want.”
Ahuriri has drawn wide in barrier 13 but retains favouritism at $3.80, with top apprentice Zac Lloyd engaged for the ride. Lloyd will be busy on Saturday with nine rides, including a host of leading chances.
One of those is Master Of The Air in the two-year-old opener for Waller. The Dundeel colt showed promise on debut when finishing behind subsequent Black Opal hero King Of Pop and resumes off a break.
Lloyd also links with the O’Shea-Charlton stable for three runners: Hurstville Zagreb ($4.40) looks a live Queensland Derby hope in the Chalouhi Handicap; Interjection ($5.50) brings solid stakes form into the Magnolia Lane Financial Services Handicap; and She’s Unusual ($4.60) shapes as a major player in the Wilson Asset Management Handicap given her heavy track record.
