Charterhouse, under the guidance of trainer Ciaron Maher, is set to commence his winter campaign in Melbourne, starting with the Thoroughbred Club Of Australia Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield this Saturday.
The Irish import had a commendable first Australian preparation, highlighted by a victory in the Cranbourne Cup on soft ground. However, his performances in Queensland and New South Wales earlier this year were mixed, prompting a return to Victoria.
Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull mentioned that the team has taken a measured approach to prepare Charterhouse for the upcoming Winter Championship Series, where he previously secured a runner-up finish in the final at Flemington.
“He’s progressing nicely, but it’s been a gradual process,” Turnbull said.
“After a decent spell, we’ve focused on resetting him. He seemed to lose his spark last preparation, and race day feedback indicated he wasn’t at his best.
“Now, he’s had ample work and is physically fit. This race will help us assess his mental readiness.
“We believe he’s ready, which is why we’re starting his campaign here.”
Turnbull highlighted Charterhouse’s strong performance in the Country Cup (2000m) at Caulfield last November, where he finished second to Torranzino, demonstrating his versatility over longer distances.
“While 2000 meters might stretch him, keeping him fresh makes him effective over a mile to 1800 meters,” Turnbull noted.
“He’ll remain in Melbourne this season, targeting the Winter Championship Series, which is why we’ve brought him back into work now.”
