Trainer Steve Wolfe and jockey Shaun McGruddy once again found themselves in the winner’s circle, securing their second major country feature in as many weeks.

Fresh off the back of Rope Them In’s impressive victory in the $400,000 Bluff Knoll (1099m) at Albany, the duo struck again as Currimundi charged home late to claim the Listed Pinjarra Cup (2300m) on Sunday.

Settling in ninth position on the turn, Currimundi unleashed a powerful finish to overtake Fear The Wind in the final strides. The thrilling three-way finish saw Currimundi prevail by a short-neck, with Demolish, who briefly hit the lead, finishing another long-neck behind in third.

Meanwhile, Bunbury Cup winner Captain Pluto, the race favorite, was unable to replicate his last-start success, closing strongly but only managing fourth after settling toward the rear.

A son of Playing God, Currimundi secured his first victory since completing the Albany Cup (2100m) – Diggers Cup (1800m) double a year ago. Sent out at $11, the six-year-old bounced back from a seventh-place finish in the recent Bunbury Cup (2019m), turning the tables on race rival Captain Pluto.

“He handled the turn much better today,” McGruddy said post-race.

“In the Bunbury Cup, he lost about four lengths between the 600m and 400m.

“He was laying out, and that cost him.

“But today, while he still dropped the bridle a bit, he didn’t completely lose touch.

“I was in striking range at the top of the straight.

“He’s not really bred to be a strong stayer—being by Playing God—but he’s a homebred and tough as nails.

“Steve Wolfe has done a fantastic job with him.”

For Wolfe, it was a memorable second Pinjarra Cup triumph, nearly three decades after his first with King Brian in 1999.
