Wuddzz wants it wet at Randwick races

Trainer Henry Dwyer is set for a hectic few days as he manages the final build-up for Group 1-winning mare Asfoora ahead of her Royal Ascot return, while also chasing a wet-track win in Sydney with durable stayer Wuddzz.

Asfoora will complete her final piece of serious work at Flemington on Friday before heading to the UK, aiming to defend her crown in the King Charles III Stakes (1000m) next month. Dwyer is keen to see a sharper effort after a slightly underwhelming performance in the recent Robert Sangster Stakes.

“She just ran flat, but this gallop should switch her back on,” Dwyer said.

Saturday’s attention turns to Wuddzz, who will relish the rain-soaked Randwick conditions for the 2400m P F Civil Handicap. With 70mm of rain forecast across Thursday and Friday, the heavy track plays right into the gelding’s strengths.

“He’s a genuine wet-tracker,” Dwyer said. “We’ve barely seen his best because the conditions haven’t been there, but when it rains, he comes to life.”

Wuddzz, who cost just NZ$600, is coming off a strong win at Warrnambool and is set to thrive again under Dylan Gibbons on Saturday. His five career victories have helped him surpass $205,000 in prizemoney.

“He missed a lot of racing early on, but he’s found his niche now,” Dwyer added. “With rain forecast and 2400 metres, this looks ideal.”
