Young trainer Denim Wynen will long remember the first Sydney metropolitan meeting of the new season after scoring her maiden city win with Sunshine Law at Rosehill.
The 29-year-old from the Central Coast has only had a few city starters in her short career but was confident the mare could run well based on what she had shown in trackwork.
“I’m so stoked,” Wynen said.
“My trackwork rider said the first gallop she did on her that she thinks she is quite a serious horse, so for her to say that, I thought, I’ve got a nice horse.”
Formerly trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald, Sunshine Law was secured for $85,000 at an online auction by her new owners and was having her first start for Wynen.
Among a small team of just six horses in work, Sunshine Law’s city triumph was a career highlight for Wynen.
“I still can’t believe it’s true,” she said.
“They (owners) actually rang me the day before and said they were looking at a couple of tried horses online.
“They’ve been a big support to my stable over the last six months. They’ve bought some weanlings and they wanted to get to the races sooner, so they decided to go to the tried sales and picked up two nice horses from Yulong.
“I think we’re going to have some fun with her.”
Wynen first trained horses as a hobby before taking on clients professionally two years ago. She credits Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan for helping her into the industry.
“I didn’t want to go to school anymore when I was fourteen. My brother was working with horses and my mum said if I got a job I was allowed to leave school,” she said.
“I went and worked for Kristen Buchanan. She took me in and she was like a mum to me and that’s where I’ve been since.”
Sunshine Law ($4.80 in betting) delivered a second straight win on the card for apprentice Anna Roper, taking out the Congratulations James McDonald Handicap (1400m) by half a length from Super Norwest ($7), with Pippie Beach ($4) finishing third.
