Zebra Finch, trained by James Cummings, emerged as a live contender for the Group 1 J.J. Atkins following a hard-fought win at Rosehill on Saturday.
The Godolphin colt had the blinkers added after a pair of promising efforts earlier in the campaign, and the gear change made a difference in the Schweppes Handicap (1300m), where he took up a forward position under Kerrin McEvoy on a rain-affected track.
Zebra Finch ($4) fought off a bold challenge from outsider Zoutanium ($14), with favourite Hidden Achievement ($2.90) storming late to be close-up in third.
“It was good to see him adapt and put himself in the race,” McEvoy said.
“He’s still learning but he gives the feel of a horse that wants a mile. If he pulls up well, I’d be taking him to Brisbane.”
The result saw Zebra Finch’s odds slashed from $51 to $26 for the J.J. Atkins, a testament to his growing appeal among punters and analysts alike.
Betting interest has surged following the win, with punters looking to snap up early value through leading betting sites offering JJ Atkins futures markets.
Stable representative Paul Reid confirmed that the Atkins was a serious consideration, noting the colt’s improvement with the blinkers on.
“He handled himself better today and got into a good rhythm early, which made a big difference,” Reid said.
“We’ve always had Brisbane in mind but wanted to see him step up, and he did that today.”
