Australian Derby Tips, Bets and Race Preview – 2022

Some of our best three-year-old colts and gelding will seek their place history books in Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Derby.

Hitotsu has become an extremely value galloper during his last two preparations, and it comes as no surprise that the Maurice colt has opened a warm favourite in 2022 Australian Derby betting.

Have I put him on top? Scroll down to my 2022 Australian Derby Tips to find out!

Australian Derby – Winner – No. 1 Hitotsu

It actually has taken me quite a bit of time to come around on Hitotsu, but his first-up performance and win in the Australian Guineas was simply too good to ignore.

He hinted at above-average talented during his two-year-old season, but last spring’s prep was certainly the making of this horse, and he ended his year with a dominant win in the Victoria Derby.

I thought he’d be a little vulnerable first-up this time, but he silenced me and a lot of other critics, and he’ll only be better second-up and out to a mile and a half.

Johnny Allen rides from an ideal barrier, and I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish.

Australian Derby – 2nd – No. 2 Alegron

He hasn’t shown his best in two starts back this time, but I don’t think anyone really expected him to, and he finally gets out to his ideal conditions in the Australian Derby.

Alegron was excellent during his spring preparation, and he ended his season second behind Hitotsu in the Australian Derby.

So far this time, he has finished eighth in the CS Hayes Stakes and eleventh in the Australian Guineas, and he should be cherry ripe for Hugh Bowman in this contest.

Australian Derby – 3rd – No. 8 Character

Character is on a short back-up, but he couldn’t have been more impressive in the Tulloch Stakes on Monday, and he is rock-hard fit.

The Teofilo gelding has recorded two wins and a minor from his three starts back this time, but run at Newcastle on Monday was easily the best of his career to date.

Any improvement at all will find him hard to beat.

Australian Derby – 4th – No. 3 Forgot You

Forgot You has improved for three starts back this time, and he too looks ready to peak in the Australian Derby.

The Savabeel colt finished fourth in each of his first two starts back this time, including the Australian Guineas, and he filled the minors behind Anamoe in the Rosehill Guineas last time out.

Breeding suggests that he will stay all day, and he too rates as a key Derby winning chance.
