Federer ready to serve it up to rivals

Federer, named after a tennis legend and out of Caulfield Cup winner Jameka, steps into Saturday’s Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1800m) at Rosehill looking to continue his upward trajectory.

The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding is lightly raced, with four starts and two wins under his belt. After a long layoff, he resumed with a midfield finish at Randwick over 1400m and will appreciate more ground second-up.

“Now he’s a bit older you can see his breeding coming through,” said Johann Gerard-Dubord. “He wants a trip now. Drawn well, fit, he’ll be competitive.”

Stablemate Piggyback also lines up in the 1800m race, adding further depth to Maher’s hand.

In the TAB Handicap (1100m), Berezka looks to build on her recent form. “She’s similar to Nadal, not as talented maybe, but has the turn of foot,” Gerard-Dubord said. “She’s drawn well and loves dry ground.”

Spywire returns from gelding after a short summer campaign that featured a run in The Sunlight. He has matured mentally and is expected to improve through the campaign.

“He’s more relaxed now. He’s wintery but classy and will benefit from this run,” Gerard-Dubord noted.
