Expectations were sky-high when Earlswood transitioned from Ireland to Australia, and his debut win in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield only reinforced those hopes.
That victory came back in February 2022 under Maddie Raymond, but his form has since proven patchy. Now trained by Gavin Bedggood, Earlswood’s only other Australian win came in Ballarat’s Gold Nugget last spring.
This Saturday, he’ll tackle the MRC Membership Feel The Thrill Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield, coming off a pair of encouraging Sandown efforts, including a second to Saban last start.
“He’s flying and he would be the healthiest horse in my stable,” said Bedggood. “He’s got a coat on him like it’s the middle of summer.”
Bedggood explained the key to Earlswood is in how he’s ridden. “You almost have to ride the horse like that, as when he gets clean air too far out, he presents to win the race and is just plain late.”
“I think he is better when he gets that run on the back of the speed and gets out late and darts through the line.”
John Allen takes the ride on Saturday, reuniting with the horse he’s previously won on. In markets, Earlswood sits at $5 behind favourite Sayedaty Sadaty at $3.90.
