The spotlight will be firmly on Via Sistina in the Winx Stakes, but jockey Tommy Berry says stablemate Gringotts is perfectly placed to cause an upset as he resumes on Saturday at Randwick.

The gelding begins his new campaign in the 1400m feature, fresh from breaking through for his maiden Group 1 victory in the George Ryder Stakes (1500m) last preparation.

Berry believes the race distance and likely wet conditions are both big positives for Gringotts. Randwick was rated a heavy 10 midweek after persistent rainfall, with little improvement expected before raceday.

“He has trialled really well on two occasions now and if you look at a lot of the horses going to the Winx, the 1400 isn’t going to be their preferred trip,” Berry said.

“But his first-up record is great, his 1400-metre record is great and it’s right in his sweet spot.

“He has ticked that wet track box off as well.

“He’s going awesome. I’m really looking forward to him.”

Gringotts has excelled at the trip, with five wins and four runner-up finishes from 10 runs at 1400m. While he has never raced on a genuine heavy track, his winning Gosford trial in deep ground suggests he will manage the conditions.

The Winx Stakes has attracted an elite lineup of 12, featuring nine Group 1 winners including Via Sistina, Fangirl, Aeliana, Ceolwulf and the Australian Cup winner Light Infantry Man.
