Joe Pride has unearthed a colt with both pedigree and performance, with Attica making a winning debut at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. The Lonhro colt is the first foal of multiple Group winner Savatiano and is among the best-bred horses Pride has trained since taking Godolphin horses into his care.
“It’s got to be close (to the best), doesn’t it?” Pride said of Attica’s bloodlines. “When they gave me the horses they said, ‘we’ve given you Attica’ and I didn’t know who Attica was so I looked it up and thought, wow.”
Attica ($4.40) was made to earn the win under Adam Hyeronimus but lifted late to catch Decorum ($8), a full brother to Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Switzerland. It was a promising first outing, especially for a colt with such a relaxed temperament.
“First start in a race and you’ve got to come here and do it under race pressure and as much as he’s shown us at home, he is a very laidback, casual type,” Pride said. “He needed to wake up today and he did that under race pressure, which is good.”
Pride will consider black type targets for Attica as he builds fitness and experience through the carnival.
Meanwhile, Kris Lees produced another smart three-year-old in Cantiamo, who carried 60kg to victory in the Precise Air Handicap (1200m). Sent out $3.10 favourite, she made it two from two this campaign with James McDonald steering her to a narrow win over Surf’s Up ($14).
“She’s an exciting filly. She’s not winning by big margins but she’s not the finished product yet either so she is doing a good job,” Lees said. “There are a couple of options in Melbourne I’d consider, one around the Valley. She is ticking all the boxes so far.”
