Open Secret faces a tough test in Saturday’s Furious Stakes, but trainer John Thompson believes the filly is primed for the longer trips later in the Princess Series.
Her last-start fourth to Savvy Hallie in the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) was an encouraging bounce back after an uncharacteristic first-up flop caused by a slip from the gates and a hamstring twinge. “She normally jumps well and that day she missed the kick… she actually slipped out of the gates and pulled a ‘hammie’, so we had to give her a couple of weeks off,” Thompson revealed.
Thompson is hopeful a firmer surface will play to her strengths, with Randwick rated a soft 6 heading into the weekend and clear weather expected. He sees the Furious as the right lead-up to the Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).
Open Secret will jump from gate three under Alysha Collett, who has ridden her in both runs this prep. “She is looking like she is looking for 1400 or a mile… I reckon they will be too sharp for her this week but looking towards those races, she is going super,” Thompson said. “Alysha came and galloped her… she had improved.”
The Furious has drawn a capacity field of 16, although Angel Ladder is expected to remain in Melbourne for the Atlantic Jewel Stakes.
