Tigroni’s owners eye big payday in the Magic Millions Classic

Tigroni will attempt to snatch a maiden-breaking success in Saturday’s $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic, though a victory is not required for her owners to walk away with a significant windfall.

The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained filly is among just three runners eligible for the lucrative Racing Women’s Bonus, which offers an additional $500,000 for horses owned entirely by women.

With the Classic carrying a $1.7 million winner’s cheque, Charlton said the opportunity was too good to ignore given Tigroni’s consistency, highlighted by her third placing in the Gold Pearl last weekend.

“Once she was trialling well back in October time and then raced very well first-up it was probably the obvious target, particularly given she’s a ladies syndicate horse,” Charlton said.

“She had a little freshen up and then ran well again when third behind By Choice and then, again, we we’re happy with her run on Saturday when things probably didn’t quite go to plan.

“So, this is a race we’ve targeted. We’re under no illusion, but if there’s a few chinks in the armours of the top picks then she might be a good top-three chance.”

An $85,000 Gold Coast Sale purchase by Tiger Of Malay, Tigroni is a $41 chance and heads the market among the three Racing Women’s Bonus contenders, with Leaves Of Lorien and Inhabit both longshots.

Punters keen to follow the Magic Millions 2YO Classic can explore early markets through major online bookmakers ahead of Saturday’s feature.

Charlton is also optimistic about Getafix’s prospects in the $2 million Magic Millions Cup, after shifting focus away from the Golden Eagle.

The grey’s most recent run resulted in a fifth placing in the Listed Canterbury Sprint (1200m), a race Charlton felt provided a solid platform for improvement.

“He’s had a great little freshen up and then ran well last start,” Charlton said.

“Spywire, who finished behind him, won The Syndicate so that form may be okay and he gets back to 1400.”

Getafix will carry 53kg from barrier one with Zac Lloyd aboard in the Magic Millions Cup, where he sits second in betting behind Yellow Brick.
