Six Of Wands may have needed six attempts to break through, but his four-year-old campaign has gathered momentum and he arrives at Ipswich chasing a third consecutive victory.
Connections are keen to keep the gelding ticking over in the right grade, with Thursday’s Gordon’s Gin Benchmark 58 Handicap (1350m) offering another opportunity.
Trainer Matt Hoysted acknowledged the challenge posed by barrier 10 but remains confident in the gelding’s profile.
“She’s racing in good form but the gate has made things a bit tricky,” Hoysted said.
“She’s got good gate speed and the 1350m at Ipswich is a beautiful start as she has the whole back straight to work across.”
Six Of Wands produced a gritty performance last start over the same track and trip, earning a Racing and Sports rating of 63, and will carry 62.5kg, offset by a 2kg claim from apprentice Fiona Sandkuhl.
“It will all depend on how much work he’s made to do early but it is a nice progressional race and he does get in well enough with Fiona’s claim,” Hoysted said.
“He’s coping with his racing at the moment well and being able to stay in this grade before we go to higher competition.”
Those assessing the race from a betting angle can compare odds and markets via reputable online bookmakers.
Six Of Wands edged into $9.50 in early markets, while Land Bank, now trained by Tony Gollan, was solidly supported into $1.90.
They are the only two runners quoted under double figures in the field of 15 plus emergencies.
