Stephen Miller will need luck to be on his side this weekend as his reliable sprinter Magnificent Andy attempts to defy a tough draw in the Belmont Sprint (1400m).
Despite solid lead-up efforts in the Kia-Quokka and Northam Stakes, Magnificent Andy has drawn barrier 18 for Saturday’s Group 3 feature, although that will come in to 14 with all emergencies scratched.
“It’s a hot race and he’s out wide, but we’ll leave it to Brad Parnham—he knows the horse well,” Miller told TABradio. “With luck, he’ll be in the finish.”
Magnificent Andy was a consistent performer last prep, placing in three Group races at 1400m and winning the Hyperion Stakes after finishing third in this race last year.
Wagering operators have West Star the $2.80 favourite, followed by Western Empire at $4.40. The Boss Lady, Bustler and Magnificent Andy round out the leading chances.
Miller also has high hopes for Toropa in the Free Entry To Belmont Park Handicap. The mare resumed with a stylish win but disappointed last time, though Miller is willing to overlook that effort.
“It wasn’t up to her usual standard, but she’s come through well and worked nicely,” he said. “Brad’s confident 1200m at Belmont suits her better.”
Toropa is the $5.50 second pick behind $4.60 favourite Stormchaser with betting sites. Miller also has several other runners in action on a busy Belmont card.
