Paul Shailer celebrated his most significant career success on Friday night as Isti Star surged to a commanding victory in the $1 million Magic Millions National 2YO Classic (1000m) at the Gold Coast.
The Better Than Ready filly, expertly ridden by Michael Rodd, stamped her authority early and never looked threatened, providing Shailer with a special win on his home turf in front of long-time owners Brian and Helen Hooper.
“Brian’s been battling some health issues, but he and Helen have been huge supporters of mine,” Shailer said. “It’s a real thrill to give them a win like this.”
Originally passed in at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Isti Star was retained by Yarramalong Park and put together a solid form line, including a dominant maiden victory at Ipswich that paved her way into Friday night’s feature.
Despite a tough debut in the Magic Millions Debut, she rebounded to finish fourth in the Calaway Gal and produced a career-best performance to down Prince Tycoon and Secret Sort in the National Classic.
“She’s a versatile filly and we’ve always known she had talent,” said Shailer. “She just needed time. She’s still maturing, and I think she’ll be even better over 1400 metres and beyond.”
With her winning form now well established, punters looking to follow Isti Star in her next start can find odds and markets at leading Australian betting sites.
