Angel Capital ready to fire in CF Orr Stakes

Angel Capital returned to familiar territory on Tuesday when Chris Waller sent him for a tune-up gallop at Caulfield ahead of the $1 million CF Orr Stakes this weekend.

The stallion has raced at Caulfield more often than anywhere else and Waller said the visit was designed to sharpen his focus ahead of another shot at Group 1 success.

“Just to keep him ticking over, he’s a colt and to keep him interested,” Waller said.

“Get him back at Caulfield, which he’s been to before, get him on a soft track – his better form’s on Good tracks – and just get him used to the environment.

“It’s a big day for him and (we’re) ticking every box.”

Angel Capital made his name at Caulfield last season with wins in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and Group 2 Autumn Stakes, form that saw him purchased by Yulong and transferred to Waller’s care.

His only Caulfield run for the stable came when finishing an unlucky fourth in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

Ben Melham, who has an outstanding partnership with the horse, was back in the saddle following their strong performance in The Everest.

“He knows the horse better than I do and he said he feels great; he’s nice and relaxed,” Waller said.

“The 1400 metres, he’s ready for it, but obviously it’s going to be a great race.”

The market currently has Angel Capital sitting just behind Russell Balding Stakes winner Jimmysstar, with Evaporate also given strong consideration.
