The Hunter has built an impressive record since its introduction, and the 2025 running of the Group 2 The Hunter (1300m) looks set to attract similar attention. Twelve months ago, Briasa claimed the race before going on to Group 1 success.
Trainer Bjorn Baker will rely on Iowna Merc and Robusto this year, confident both can measure up in a competitive edition.
Iowna Merc has enjoyed a productive season, securing wins across varied company, including top-level success, and placing in strong races like the Expressway Stakes and the Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m). However, his latest performance in the Russell Balding Stakes was disappointing.
“Iowna Merc never fired on the track last time but he’s in good order,” Baker said.
“He just didn’t go at all, he didn’t fire, so I think we just press on.”
His stablemate Robusto, who now races for Darby Racing after being secured for $160,000 last year, resumes here with a longer-range target of returning to the Group 2 The Ingham (1600m), the race he famously claimed.
“Robusto’s definitely well, he’s going to be first up and try and aim towards The Ingham,” Baker said.
“He’s not out of it because he’s got some good form, although I think he probably takes a run or two to get to his best.”
Both horses will lump 59kg with matching ratings of 108, and bookmakers currently have Iowna Merc at $15 and Robusto at $13.
