Autumn Boy delivered on the promise that Chris Waller always believed he had, emulating his famous sire The Autumn Sun with a commanding victory in the $3 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
The colt ($4.20) gave Waller and jockey Damian Lane consecutive wins in the race, edging out Planet Red ($31) by three-quarters of a length, with Observer ($21) third. The result marked the first Group 1 victory for any son of The Autumn Sun.
“We’re proud of all the horses that come through the stable, but when you’ve got champions like The Autumn Sun and you’re training their sons and daughters, it’s special,” Waller said. “Last week Autumn Glow got the job done, now it’s Autumn Boy. It’s pretty special.”
Autumn Boy’s talent was identified early, and Waller made the Caulfield Guineas a long-term goal. The colt won on debut at Canterbury, added the Listed Tatts Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm, and finished runner-up in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Stakes before contesting the Golden Rose.
While unplaced there, Waller saw plenty to like. “It was a track record time. He actually ran really well, he just didn’t get the right setup,” Waller said. “We gave him time, brought him down here, and everything suggested he was ready.”
Waller said a Cox Plate (2040m) start remains possible but unlikely. “He’s still a baby, only five starts in. We’ll see how he recovers, but there’s no rush.”
Lane described the colt as a dream to ride. “He’s a beautiful, relaxed horse with a devastating turn of foot,” he said. “When I asked him to go, he quickened like a top-line colt should.”
