The Group 1 Might And Power Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield served up a reminder that racing is anything but predictable — with outsider Globe ($8.50) defying the odds to claim a brilliant all-the-way win.

In a race billed as a showdown between the $1.60 favourite Treasurethe Moment and Chris Waller’s Buckaroo ($2.70), it was Blake Shinn’s clever front-running ride that stole the show. Globe surged clear to win by three lengths, with Treasurethe Moment second and Buckaroo third, a further three-quarters of a length away.

Trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr had opted to target the Caulfield feature rather than send Globe north for the Hill Stakes (1900m) — and the bold decision delivered a $600,000 payday.

“It was a heist, wasn’t it?” Price joked post-race. “But it’s not a mathematical formula — it’s a horse race. We dream these dreams every day.”

Price revealed that the Might And Power wasn’t on the radar when the gelding’s campaign began. “It wasn’t part of the plan, but races like the Underwood Stakes and this one can throw up funny results. It’s one of those days where everything just clicked.”

Shinn said he knew tactics would be crucial. “We were underdogs, but in small fields things can change quickly,” he said. “We had no pressure as the natural leader and Globe was just too tough. It’s a great thrill.”

For Treasurethe Moment, trainer Matt Laurie will weigh up whether to continue toward the Cox Plate (2040m). “We’ve got a few options — keep going, change plans, or give her a break,” Laurie said. “She likes a genuine tempo and pressure, so small fields aren’t her go. But she’s bounced back well and we’ll decide soon.”
