Rosehill punters were treated to another glimpse of a rising superstar as Autumn Glow stormed to her sixth straight victory in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m). The four-year-old filly has now established herself as one of the most exciting horses in training, with the elusive Group 1 breakthrough looming large.
Assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth confirmed that the Epsom Handicap (1600m) remained the ultimate aim, though the handicapper’s weight allocation could influence plans. “She’s got to be the best horse in training who is yet to win a Group One, which is the one thing that’s missing off her resume, but I’m sure that will come,” Duckworth said. “She is still very lightly raced and continuing to improve. What her optimum distance is is still yet to be seen. She has got endless gears.”
With Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle, Autumn Glow ($1.30 fav) stalked the leaders before producing a dazzling burst in the straight. General Salute ($8) was left chasing in vain, finishing 2-1/4 lengths away, with Pier ($6.50) doing his best work late into third.
“She must have almost given Kerrin a fright how quickly she quickened up around the home turn,” Duckworth added. “She is just electric.”
For McEvoy, the choice of target races comes down to flexibility. “I think she’ll stay further but she’s got a motor as well. I’m sure Chris and the team will make the right call. Probably a mile because then I might be a chance to ride her.” The possibility of a tilt at The Everest remains on the table should connections decide to keep her sprinting.
