Trainer Ciaron Maher expects no recurrence of Tempted’s loss as favourite in her second-up Group 1 over 1400m from the prior campaign.
The filly by Street Boss tackles this Saturday’s $750,000 Surround Stakes at Randwick, exactly three weeks after demolishing her opponents in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m).
Spring saw Tempted claim a dynamic win on debut in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m), a couple of weeks ahead of her third to colts Beiwacht and Wodeton in the Golden Rose, and her handler is notably more satisfied this time.
“We were two weeks into the Group 1 last prep, up from the 1200 to 1400,” Maher said.
“She ran near her peak first-up over 12, so it’s hard to run back to your peak in two weeks after a peak run fresh up.
That’s why we wanted the extra week and at the 1400, especially in fillies’ race, she should be fine.”
Tempted leads Surround Stakes betting at $1.50, followed by Apocalyptic ($4.50) and Ole Dancer ($8), each with Group 1 victories over the mile.
Having trailed only Ka Ying Rising among beaten runners in The Everest and taken third in last season’s Golden Slipper, the Godolphin filly is still searching for Group 1 glory, which Maher views as forthcoming.
“She is an emerging horse that just seems to get better, or will get better,” Maher said of the filly who has had 10 starts for five, two seconds and two thirds.
“I don’t think anyone’s too concerned there, but it would be nice if it happens this prep.”
Tempted’s post-Surround Stakes program hinges on her run, with options including the March 21 William Reid Stakes in Melbourne or a spell before the April 4 T J Smith Stakes at Randwick, as Maher ponders.
